The Unwritten Rule Amongst Businesspeople

Last week a fellow businessman did me a huge favour for which I will be eternally grateful. Indeed I will never give up from trying to repay him. He went out of his way to take time to inform me of something that was wrong in my company. Only an entrepreneur could comprehend how difficult it would be to make a critical call.

This got me thinking as to what it is that makes us look out for each other in such ways. I have concluded that it is putting honour in front of our own personal objectives. Continue Reading →

Overwhelming Press Coverage

For some years I’ve always tried to make quirky news stories at work in the hope that they will go viral. I once succeeded in the mid 1990s with an advertising stunt on sheep. It got coverage on; BBC Regional News, BBC Radio 2 and a ton of newspapers. People still mention the coverage that it generated twenty years after the event. Continue Reading →

“The” Most Contentious Blog Post

This posting is probably going to upset a lot of people but it’s how I feel at the moment. To set some context I must first explain that I consider myself to be in the luckiest generation ever. For the most, we have; no outside toilets, no military conscription and few are without washing machines, central heating and electric vacuum cleaners. Beyond that, many of us are in fortunate enough to be in a position to be generous to our offspring.

It is entirely understandable that folk will want to provide more their children than they had provided for themselves by their forefathers. Although it begins in the nursery, it becomes more apparent when parents spend hundreds of pounds per year for obscure satellite or cable TV channels. It is producing an era of childhood consumption that our elders are bewildered by. Continue Reading →

How to Prevent Twitter Unfollows

You might have noticed that some influential Tweeps unfollow you. So here I’ll explain why. To stop this happening it will require you to change the way you do things now.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that the highest value @addresses are those who have a large band of followers themselves. If these guys ReTweet your message then it will be viewable by many. So if you do use tweets for dissemination of marketing messages it is critical to remain engaged with the “big guys”. Continue Reading →

New Railway Impacts on the Regions

If you are a Lancashire; butcher, baker or candlestick maker then the proposed high speed rail project (HS2) may mean more to you for social enhancements than business. So here I’ll point to a few of the plus points that affect our Northern towns.

The regeneration teams that promote our region work tirelessly to position our location as a well connected hub but the truth is that we are located over 200 miles from the principle market. They would be more effective by highlighting our true asset, our workforce! Continue Reading →

50 Shades Darker of Telephone Man

Back by Popular Demand … The Sequel to Fifty Shades of Telephone Man

50 Shades of Telephone SystemsShe was gushing with excitement that she might re-meet the engineer that had satisfied her every need on that memorable afternoon last year with her previous employer. A telephone systems fault had been her fantasy since that incident and her dream came true that Wednesday at 10 am. She’d tried to rinse those thoughts from her mind as she knew that she shouldn’t have them but resistance was futile. Her yearning for a fresh encounter was stronger than any feeling that she’d experience before. Such was the grip on her desires! Continue Reading →

The Xmas Card Solution

Every year businesses receive Christmas cards from well wishers and feel obliged to return the gesture. The whole process is costly for industry and clogs the Royal Mail thus causing unnecessary late payment of invoices.

Here I will suggest another response that harnesses the essence of the intended spirit in a non destructive way. Continue Reading →

Is Round Table Good for Developing Personnel?

In these days of text and social media there seems to be a whole generation of young people who are lacking in basic communication skill sets. Sure they are proficient in abbreviated hieroglyphics but that’s not “GR8” in the telephone systems business! So do organisations such as Round Table boost people’s ability?

From my experience I think that Tablers have far better all round personalities than those who miss out on membership. The group is fundamentally a bunch of like minded individuals who get together for; fun, fellowship and fund raising. But it’s fantastic for developing interpersonal skills as each member is encouraged to play an active part in running the show. I’ve seen some shy chaps blossom in their positions of leadership and I regularly commend it to youngsters. Continue Reading →
